Medical care services for the entire family
Access to affordable health care is available to residents who are uninsured or underinsured through federal programs such as Federally Qualified Health Centers and the Vaccines for Children program.   Refer to resources below for more information and to make an appointment. 

Newark Community Health Centers 
The mission of the Newark Community Health Center is to provide affordable, quality health care.  NCHC are federally qualified health centers with locations in Newark, Irvington, East Orange and Orange.  The total care program provides adult and family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, dentistry, optometry, podiatry and an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist. Additional services include social work support services, HIV Testing & Counseling, Nutritional Counseling and Outreach services.  Location: 101 Ludlow St.  Newark.  973-565-0355 or call 973-675-1900.

Mary Eliza Mahoney Health Centers
The mission of the Department of Health and Community Wellness is to provide and advocate for comprehensive health care, social, and environmental services to ensure an optimal level of health and well-being. They offer medical services for: adult, pediatric, WIC, dental, immunizations, childhood lead screening, specialty care, sexually transmitted infection screening and treatment and mammograms. The Mahoney Health Centers are federally qualified health centers with three locations in Newark.  To make an appointment, call (800) 734-7083.

Zufall Health Center
Zufall Health Center is a Federally Qualified Health Center, located in West Orange. As a fully licensed, Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), they provide high-quality, affordable, compassionate medical and dental care to patients in Essex County. Zufall Health welcomes patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors, regardless of income or insurance status. They offer a broad range of primary care and support services. Zufall’s bilingual, board-certified physicians and staff provide a full range of services including annual physical exams, treatment of illness and injury, and prevention and management of chronic illness such as diabetes and hypertension.

New Life Health and Wellness Center 12 Prospect St., Bloomfield 
New Life Health and Wellness Center offers healthcare for the uninsured and underinsured PEDIATRIC population.  A Nurse Practitioner Practice, their medical services include: work, school and sports physicals, women's health, on-site blood work, treatment for diabetes, hypertension and other chronic conditions. Township Adult Health Clinics
All adult residents, ages 18 and over (whether insured, Medicare enrolled or uninsured) are welcome to attend the adult health clinics which are offered two times a month and are free for Maplewood residents. Services provided include: blood pressure screenings, counseling services on medication, blood labs, weight management and nutrition, carotid bruit screening and diabetes risk assessment and health education.  Call the Maplewood Health Department at (973) 762-8120 x 4300 for the Nursing Department to schedule an appointment or to get the monthly schedule.

  2. East Orange Health Department, 143 New Street, East Orange NJ (973) 266-5465. This clinic is open to anyone, with or without insurance.  Hours of operation change frequently. Please contact the organization to verify. HIV testing by appt: Tues., Thurs., Fri., 9am-12noon and 1pm-3:30pm. Walk-in HIV testing: Mon., Wed., 9am-12noon and 1pm-3:30pm.

Cancer Prevention

FREE Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening (English)  (Creole)
Screening provided by the State Screening Access of Value to Essex Women and Men (S.A.V.E.) Program, through the University Hospital and Rutgers NJ Medical School.  This mobile van services men and women eligible for free cancer screenings in Essex County. Diabetes Prevention and Management

"Sweet Talk" Diabetes Education Class
FREE educational program on diabetes self-management for adults. Sponsored by the University Hospital Division of Ambulatory Care. Come and learn to stay healthy! Dental Health and Hygiene Services

Oral health is an important component of general health and is related to well-being and quality of life. Often, many conditions which plague the body are manifested in the mouth, an accessible vantage point from which to view the onset and management of many systemic diseases. Please refer to the website for a directory of approved dental service providers by the New Jersey Department of Health; payment methods are based on eligibility guidelines.
